The first Freedom Riders left Washington, D.C. on May 4, 1961 to protest de facto

segregation on interstate buses. Fifty-seven years later, The Road South offers an intimate

look into the lives and legacies of the riders. Throughout the book these civil rights

veterans’ poignant, personal stories offer timely insights into America’s racial past and

hopeful future. Weaving the past with the present, author B.J. Hollars aims to demystify

the legendary journey, while also confronting more modern concerns related to race in

America. The Road South is part memoir and part research-based journalism.

B.J. Hollars is the  founder and executive director of the Chippewa Valley Writers Guild, an

associate professor of English at UW-Eau Claire, and recipient of a 2018 Chippewa Valley

Vanguard Award.
